Becoming A Masterpiece

Updated: Oct 27, 2019

Kintsugi (or Kintsukuroi) is a Japanese method for repairing broken ceramics with a special lacquer mixed with gold, silver, or platinum. The philosophy behind the technique is to recognize the history of the object and to visibly incorporate the repair into the new piece instead of disguising it.

In our western way of life, human beings are starving for relief from the burden of their depression and convinced that in order to truly heal they have to repair the cracks and restore themselves back to a form that never appeared broken at all. In fact, some are told that true healing happens when the broken pieces are discarded all together. The pressure to heal in such a way creates additional anxiety and further perpetuates perfectionism and the belief that we are not good enough. So we find ourselves stuck and hungry for answers. We turn to a system designed to profit on both our perceived inadequacies and our desire to BE and FEEL good…enough. We try to discard our “bad” pieces and conceal our cracks in meaningful and meaningless ways. Hoping peace will come or questioning the meaning of life when it does not. All the while fearing this simple truth: Healing happens when you stop trying to disown the bad and instead allow yourself to examine your fragments, your parts, your broken pieces and assign them NEW meaning. Meaning that promotes your value and honors your integrity as an imperfect human vessel. Once you have accepted your G-d given ability to CREATE meaning and shift your perspective (I know it’s hard) you can then experience the freedom of self-acceptance, cracks and all. The finished product, something like a kintsugi. – Sending you positive energy in abundance.
